Ecostars, a hotel sustainability certificate with simple and digital evaluation
What is the Ecostars Certificate?
Ecostars is a specific sustainability certification for hotels that awards eco-stars based on the environmental impact per stay that a hotel has.
This certification represents a great opportunity for hotels to show their environmental commitment to customers who decide to stay at their establishment in a simple way and with a completely online process. In addition, Ecostars is recognized by international organizations such as the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and its standards have been recognized as equivalent by the Global Sustainable Tourism Coincil (GSTC) – “GSTC Recognition”.
What is the Ecostars Certification process?
The certification process is quite simple and completely digital. The first step is to register the establishment in question on the platform, fill in all the blanks with the basic data of the company and, in this way, access is obtained to the different sections of it.

Once inside the platform and with the company correctly registered, the different environmental, social and governance forms would have to be filled out.

Another important step to achieve Ecostars certification is to present the hotel’s consumption data from previous years, with the aim of demonstrating to what extent the hotel has a moderate consumption of energy, water, waste, CO2 and other concepts. Once this data has been provided, the user can consult the different metrics and consumptions made each year on the platform, in order to be able to evaluate the overall situation in a more visual way and take the necessary improvement measures.

What is the price of the Ecostars Certification?
The Ecostars Certification is free, although if the user wants to unlock other functions of the platform with the aim of continuing to improve and make their company increasingly sustainable, this would already have a subscription cost to one of the different existing plans.
There are different products and subscriptions:
Basic and free certification
In this case, the service would have no cost and, if the hotel meets the access requirements, it would obtain the Ecostars Certification.

Certification
Once all the relevant documentation has been submitted, in a matter of days, the hotel will receive the Ecostars Certification, on a parameter of one to five stars, depending on whether the company complies to a greater or lesser extent with the program’s sustainability standards. Upon completion of the certification process, the hotel will receive a physical welcome pack that includes a metal plaque for the establishment’s door and a dozen small metal awareness plaques for the guestroom bathrooms. Likewise, the hotel also virtually receives the Ecostars seal to be able to place it on its website and social networks.
Certified Companies
Without a doubt, this is currently a very interesting program for hotels, since tourism sustainability is becoming increasingly important. This type of action represents an opportunity to show the public the commitment of tourism companies to the environment and, today, large hotel chains such as Melia Hotels, Vincci Hoteles, Paradores, H10 Hotels, Eurostars Hotel Company, and many more, already have this sustainability seal.
